PRESS RELEASE, SIGNED JOINTLY BY THE AFSSAPS AND THE DGCCRF
This press release states that formaldehyde in straightening products is dangerous to human health.
Used by professionals or sold on the Internet, these products should be avoided. In fact, after chronic exposure in humans, formaldehyde – absorbed through the respiratory tract – can cause cancer in the nasopharynx. In addition, it may also be linked to the development of leukaemias as well as sinus and nasal cavity cancers and may additionally cause eye and respiratory irritation and contact eczema.
Consequently, the French Health Products Safety Agency (AFSSAPS) and the General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) has taken the decision to regulate the market.
